Top 5 food festivals in Devon
Anyone who has ever been to Devon will be able to tell you that the food is amazing and with there being a whole host of food festivals taking place in the county throughout the year there are plenty to choose from. Here are a selection to whet your appetite.
1. South Molton Summer Festival (July)
This summer festival is held at South Molton’s Pannier Market where you can enjoy an extensive range of produce and also items such as records, dvds and more! Make sure you don’t miss any of the action by staying over, the Poltimore Inn Accommodation in South Molton provides a conveniently located base and is an attractive, traditional country pub with a great atmosphere. Or for something a little different, take a look at Blindwell Bunkhouse, which has some amazing views across Exmoor. If you can’t get enough of local produce, you’ll also only be a short distance from Quince Honey Farm, where you can find out more about life on a working honey farm and sample some local honey.
2. Plymouth Seafood Festival (September)
The Plymouth Seafood Festival is a huge festival that is now in its seventh year and offers entertainment and workshops as well as some of the best sea food on offer. Plymouth is a huge place, so if, heaven forbid, you find yourself looking for something to do, you won’t be too far away from something that will take your fancy. While you’re in the area, you can check out Pentillie Castle where you can stroll around the grounds and visit the castle. If you’re looking for some luxury, you can stay over at Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa, which is a unique, historic and captivating Grade 1 listed building. Nearby is Langdon Court Hotel and Restaurant, a 16th century manor house that offers a great place to rest after a day exploring the seafood festival.
3. The Great Food and Drink Festival (September)
The Great Food and Drink Show is a weekend packed with all things food and drink in Exeter. Featuring wine tasting, cooking demonstrations and the chance to see Ready Steady Cook live! If you want to break up the day, work off some of that food by heading to Haldon Forest Park where you can take a gentle stroll or cycle before returning for more great food. You could always make the Devon Hotel your base and enjoy their restaurant and spa facilities or for something a bit different, stay at South View Lodges, where you’ll find top of the range, lake-side self-catering Devon lodges offering a unique place to lay your head.
4. Taste of the Teign (September)
This autumnal festival is hosted in Teignmouth and celebrates all the flavours of the Teign Estuary, it’s a place where you can sample mussels, crabs, jams, cakes, ales, gin, wine and even more! Aside from being able to enjoy the cute seaside town of Teignmouth and the surrounding areas, you’ll be in the right place to visit Babbacombe Model Village, an award-winning attraction in nearby Babbacombe. You’ll also be a short journey away from Torquay, where you can experience a whole host of cultural activities but also Torquay Dinosaur World, which will keep the kids (and some adults too!) entertained. There are lots of great places to stay in the area, Devon Valley Holiday Park is on the banks of the River Teign and they welcome dogs, so your four-legged friends can also join you at the festival. Riviera Apartments are also nearby and are self-catering, so you can fill up with all the great local produce on offer at the festival.
5. Powderham Food Festival (October)
This festival has been running since 2012 and is set on the grounds of Powderham Castle. There are a group of trained chefs appearing every year, producing some amazing meals and live music over the weekend providing non-stop entertainment. Being at Powderham Castle means you’re close to The Paint Hub, an arts and crafts café that makes a unique option for a day out and also Explore Devon on a Treasure Trail, where the whole family can join in one of 46 self-guided treasure trails. There are several holiday parks nearby for anyone wanting to stay over for the whole weekend, such as Cofton Holidays, which is nestled in a secluded valley and is an ideal base if you want to do some exploring while you’re in Devon. Hazelwood Holiday Park is nearby too and has lots of different accommodation options.
