When the weather is hot, there is nothing better than grabbing your surf board and finding some gnarly waves. You might think that’s all well and good, but I can’t afford to get to California or Australia or any other fabulous place to get surfing, well, you don’t have to, Devon is home to some of the best surfing beaches in the UK.
Beaches in Devon attract thousands of people all year around for some top level surfing and there are plenty of different types of beach giving you several great surfing experiences, all in one county.
To convince you you don’t need to hop on a plane and head to the other side of the world, here are some of Devon’s best beaches for surfing.
Saunton
Saunton is a stunning beach on Devon’s north coast, it is overlooked by the beautiful Saunton Sands Hotel and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more diverse beach – this beach is truly huge, meaning there is plenty of room for both surfers and those that are just there to relax. The slow rolling water here are great for beginners and pros alike.
Lynmouth
You might need to time it just right, but if you get the right day, Lynmouth has some truly amazing waves for surfing! We’d only recommend that experienced surfers take on the water here, its rocky and the waves can get very high!
This is arguably the most popular spot for surfing in Devon, the bay is surrounded by surf shops, schools and guides who are happy to give a helping hand, but it does mean that it gets crowded very quickly. The scenery around it is pretty stunning so even if you’re the only surfer in your group, the others won’t be too bored!
Bantham
This little beach just up the road from Salcombe is a haven for surfers, when the swell is up, Bantham has waves between two and twelve feet and being close to the River Avon means there’s a strong riptide here too.
Westward Ho!
The beach at Westward Ho! is a great spot for anyone just getting started with surfing, it is long, open and has lifeguards on duty during the summer and the waves are nice and slow. You’ll find plenty of local surf schools offering tuition and advice for anyone who wants to give surfing a go.
Of course, everyone has their own personal favourite surfing spot, but don’t dismiss heading to Devon, when the sun is in the sky and you’re on the board, you could be anywhere in the world. Whether you fancy beautiful, sandy stretches or rocky reefs, you’ll find a beach for you in Devon.
