Kingsbridge is Devon’s southernmost point and stands at the head of the Salcombe Estuary.
Kingsbridge is a hub of shops and eateries, including butchers, bakeries, fishmongers, green grocers and delicatessens, as well as antique shops, gift shops, art galleries, pubs and more. It is a quirky and pretty town with plenty to offer for anyone wanting to spend a day taking it easy.
The town is full of interesting passages and alley ways that show off the history and hidden treasures, like the mosaics and community garden, where you can enjoy the plentiful wildlife.
There are many options for the more adventurous among you in this town with the paddleboarding and watersports on offer and there are points that link up with the South West Coast Path Trail.
From Kingsbridge there is easy access to Burgh Island, where you can either walk (in low tide) or catch the sea tractor from Bigbury Beach. Agatha Christie is said to have written two novels on the island, so you never know inspiration might strike! You’ll also be able to see the beautiful Hope Cove Beach, with its gorgeous sandy beaches and rolling countryside. For those that enjoy nature and have a camera handy, you can easily spend your whole day here.
After all the exploring, you’ll want to stop off for something to eat, one of the best places in Kingsbridge is the Millbrook Inn, winner of the South West Dining Pub of the year 2016-17. Nestled in the middle of the village of South Pool which transports you straight into a quaint English countryside novel.
Kingsbridge is also home to some wonderful places to stay for you to rest up before you head off to explore the rest of the county.
Down Farm is a 600 year old farmhouse offering bed and breakfast and overlooks Lannacombe Bay. It’s close to the South West Coast Path, so you can even walk there!
The Cottage Hotel is a family run hotel in a spectacular coastal location above a sandy beach where you’ll find a relaxing holiday atmosphere with excellent cuisine. There is also the Thurlestone Hotel, a four star luxury hotel set in 19 acres of coastline near Salcombe, the accommodation also includes a spa and coastal golf course.
Kingsbridge is a hub of events taking place all year round. From their Farmers’ Markets to their Christmas Celebration. The best small event in the UK, DadFest, the UKs only festival for dads and their children and the home to the official dad dancing championships takes place in Kingsbridge this September.
