When the weather is how it has been for the past few weeks, we all want to just head straight to the beach, slap on some suncream, grab a hat and paddle to our hearts content. For those of you lucky enough to be heading to the beach this summer, here are ten of the best beaches you can find when on your trip to Devon.
Bigbury on Sea
This is one of Devon’s best kept secret, this is a spot of extreme natural beauty and is the perfect spot for escaping everyday life. From here you’ll also be able to get the sea tractor over to Burgh Island, it is also home to one of the oldest pubs in the country.
Croyde Bay Beach
This is probably Devon’s most popular beach and when you visit, you’ll see why. It is a relatively small beach, but it is always bustling with tourists and visitors, especially those that are into their surfing. Baggy Point is also accessible from here if you fancy a walk among sand dunes.
Bantham Beach
This is one of North Devon’s most interesting beaches and has been featured in the Lonely Planet’s Best Beaches in Europe. It is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has also won award from the Marine Conservation Society. It is a great spot for surfing, relaxing and taking a stroll along the front.
Ladram Bay
You’ll think you’ve left Devon for somewhere exotic when you head to Ladram Bay, the brilliant turquoise water and rocky landscape makes this a great spot for any budding photographers.
Broadsands Beach
This secretive cove is located in Paignton and will give you the feeling that you’re on a private beach somewhere further afield. There are clear waters, sea caves partially hidden by caves. It isn’t the easiest beach to get to with steep steps leading down to the sand but it is worth the trip to experience the beauty of the area.
Woolacombe Beach
This is a 3-mile-long stretch of golden sands and is a favourite with families and holiday makers. Head to the beach to see the colourful beach huts and enjoy the nearby town where you can grab refreshments and stock up on your buckets and spades to keep the kids entertained.
Plymouth Hoe
This is a small beach, but the lively natural harbour makes it an interesting place to visit, there is also a promenade area and Smeaton’s Lighthouse, which makes a great picnic spot and is very instagrammable.
Dawlish Beach
Dawlish town beach is a mixture of sand and shingle and is a great place for swimming, you can grab a pleasure boat trip around the bay in the summer, plus Dawlish town is a charming place to visit, you can look out for the black swans that live in the river through the middle of the town.
Bantham Beach
This is a great beach to relax on, especially if you like feeling like you’re miles from your normal life. You’ll have marvellous views over Burgh Island and is one of the quieter beaches for anyone wanting some peace.
Torre Abbey Sands
This friendly coastal town is one the main sandy beach in Torquay, it’s perfect for anyone wanting a few hours in the sand, but also wanting to stay close to town as local amenities are close by. It is also close to the home of Agatha Christie, giving you plenty to do when in the area, as well as pedalos and kayaks available for hire.
