South West Water, the supplier for many of the homes and resorts in Devon, has asked that everyone use water wisely during the hot, dry weather, especially as the region prepares to welcome holidaymakers and school children enjoying their summer holidays.
Over the past month, the hot and dry spell has led to a very high demand for water.
Rob Scarrott, Head of Environment for South West Water, said: “We’re still working hard behind the scenes to meet the increased demand for water and reviewing the situation closely. With the dry weather forecast to continue and the school holidays upon us, the more water we all save now, the more will be left for the rest of the summer. Small changes in water use make a big difference when multiplied by the millions of people we serve.
“Gardening typically accounts for much of the additional demand we see during hot weather and this is where we can collectively help conserve supplies.”
South West Water have shared their top tips for saving water in the garden and home, which will save money for customers on a meter and ensure there is enough water for all the holiday makers visiting over the summer.
The changes you can make in the garden include:
Using a watering can instead of a hose and watering in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
If you want to wash your car, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose, or you could leave it another week, the dust is only going to continue!
Use any remaining water from your water butt before using other water sources.
The changes you can make in the home or your holiday base include: turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and showering rather than taking a bath.
Keeping a jug of water in the fridge will stop you having to run the tap to get cold water, you can also use a bowl for washing up/rinsing fruit and veg and then use the water for your plants.
For anyone with a dishwasher or washing machine, only use it when you have a full load, this will help save money too! You can also save money on your energy bills by only filling the kettle with as much water as you need.
It’s also important to fix any leaks so you aren’t using up water unnecessarily.
