Britain is in the middle of a heatwave, the schools are about to break up and July is national picnic month, so what could be better than grabbing a blanket, a basket full of food and exploring Devon?
So here are the region’s best picnic spots!
- Cockington, Torquay
There are several pay and display car parks in the village and there are lots of beautiful places for you to take a selfie or two in front of. At the heart of the village is Cockington Court, a manor house that is surrounded by park land which is perfect for a picnic. The manor also has regular art exhibitions and workshops to keep you entertained. Plus you can explore other places in Torquay while you’re there.
- Bigbury-on-sea, Salcombe
This is a popular destination for a beachside picnic, you can catch the sea tractor over to Burgh Island and visit one of the oldest pubs in the country.
- Grand Western Canal Country Park, Tiverton
Just along from the car park is a patch of grassland overlooking the canal complete with picnic tables. It is a beautiful place to stop and enjoy your lunch alfresco. There is also a nature reserve, ideal for a peaceful walk or cycle ride.
- Roadford Lake, West Devon
This beautiful lake is situated in the beautiful surroundings of the Wolf Valley and is a must visit area during your stay. There are lots of fun activities you can experience before settling down to enjoy your picnic.
- Watermouth Bay, Ilfracombe
The cove at Watermouth Bay has picture perfect views and a charming harbour for you to explore, take a seat on one of the cliffs over looking the bay or find a spot in the cove to settle down with your sandwiches.
- Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth
Just a short walk from the city centre is Plymouth Hoe, you’ll get beautiful views across the coast and there are large stretches of open green space, perfect for picnicking. Why not try to find the Smeaton Tower light house and use it as the backdrop to your picnic.
- Spitchwick, River Dart
Spitchwick is a lovely little place to visit and is set on the banks of the River Dart giving you a wonderful view over lunch. There is Spitchwick Common for you to work off those calories in and a footpath running alongside the river for a more gentle stroll.
- Beer Beach, Seaton
Why not follow the popular Beer to Branscombe walk and take in some stunning cliff tops and coastal views, there are lots of open grassland covering the coastal path that make good spots for stopping for a picnic or you could just stay in Beer and eat on the beach.
- Budleigh Salterton
Situated on the Jurassic Coast, the pebble beach is ideal for anyone wanting a beach side picnic but not that keen on sand getting in their sausage rolls. There is a pay and display carpark right next to the beach and being in an area of outstanding natural beauty is worth a trip.
- Dartmoor
You might have to try and shield your picnic basket from wild ponies, but the Dartmoor national park has lots of great spots for dining al fresco, plus there are many ancient villages and museums so you can make a whole day trip out of it.
