If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Devon during the summer holidays, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best places for you to visit with the family. Devon is one of the best places in the UK to take a family holiday, its diverse landscape offers a range of different attractions to suit everyone’s abilities and tastes.
Active teens will love the surf schools available around the region, while the toddlers can enjoy soft play sites or small holdings.
With so much to entertain, it was hard whittling down to just this short list, so make sure to look at our attractions and events to find the best places to suit your trip.
Set in over 90 acres of parkland within Dartmoor National Park on the edge of Dartmoor is River Dart Country Park. This award-winning holiday park is packed with great things to do for the whole family, whether you’re staying on site or just visiting for the day, you’ll get the chance to try out the Commando Assault course, zip wires, jungle fun and more!
Woodlands Family Theme Park is an action-packed attraction featuring the largest water coasters in Devon and has one of the biggest indoor play centres in the South west. With 11 play zones full of rides, attractions and small animals, there is something for everyone at this 100-acre family park in Dartmouth.
For those of you staying nearer Bideford, you can visit the all-weather family adventure park, Milky Way Adventure Park, which was Large Attraction of the Year in 2016 by Visit Devon and was the only attraction in the region to win TripAdvisor’s Travellers Choice Awards for two years running. This site has over 110,000 sq feet of indoor fun and acres of outdoor activities.
Of course, there is also the Crealy sites, with accommodation and an adventure park featuring over 60 rides and attractions offering a great day out whatever the weather. There are also a range of events taking place throughout the year, so you’re guaranteed a good day if you visit during the summer holidays.
If adventure parks aren’t your thing, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to animal parks and small holdings.
The National Marine Aquarium on the harbour side at Plymouth is the largest aquarium in the country. It is home to several species of shark, as well as displays of local marine life and runs conservation and education programmes, so the little ones can learn something while they’re out of school!
Pennywell Farm is another top spot, this hands-on attraction will allow the whole family to get up close and personal with a range of small animals, from rabbits to ducks and even miniature pigs. There are activities run all year round including daily pig racing and play areas.
Devon has a great range of country houses and historical buildings to visit.
Powderham Castle is a great choice for older children and provides themed activities for five to eleven-year olds. Aside from the entertaining guided tours, there are also acres to explore, a nature trail, walled garden area and pet corner.
The National Trust has several properties in Devon including Greenway House, which once belonged to Agatha Christie and Compton Castle, in Paignton, which is a fortified manor house dating back to the 1300s.
