When you’re heading to Devon to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you might not think about going to Exeter, but this unique city, which is neatly tucked away between beaches and the wilderness of Dartmoor is the perfect place for a day trip to break up the holiday.
It is small and easily walkable for those with little legs or those who want something a bit more gentle and has a wonderful mix between history, high street stores and being a student town, also has a good night life.
We’ve got you covered with places to stay while you’re in Exeter, Jury’s Inn Exeter is a hotel located close to all of the major attractions and is only a two-minute walk to the shopping quarter for the big spenders among you!
The Wood Life is a secluded woodland camp which is ideal for families, located just outside Exeter city centre, they offer all the charm of camping but with the comforts of home.
On the edge of the city is the Devon Hotel, which is popular with guests and locals alike, set in an elegant Georgian building and retaining its historic charm and boasting a renowned restaurant, this is a luxury stop over. If you’re looking for something a bit more rustic, take a look at South View Farm House, a 4-star silver award-winning B&B just two miles from the city centre and set on a small working farm in a stunning location, you’ll get the best of both worlds here.
If your group wants to split up so the shoppers can explore the high street and Princesshay shopping centre and the rest of you challenge yourself to something else, there are plenty of attractions to fill your day. There are several walking tours of the city, including the Exeter City Wall Trail, Exeter Medieval Trail and Exeter’s Riverside and Western Skyline walk. You are also able to visit Exeter Cathedral and the University Gardens. Kids will love visiting the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, which features 16 galleries ranging from pre-history to the present day.
As can be expected with a city, there are always interesting events going on in and around the city centre, like a series of Horrible Histories events, including Awful Egyptians, which are happening in September.
While you’ll find a whole host of chain restaurants and cafes to refuel during your visit to Exeter, including some places that offer vegan and gluten free menus, there are some smaller, local places that are worth a visit. The Devon Hotel’s Carriages Brasserie features English and Continental cuisine, as well as popular dishes from around the world, including a daily carvery, make sure you call to reserve your table!
