Full of history and in a prime location to access Exeter and beyond, Tiverton is an ideal place to stop and explore during your Devon adventure.
If you need somewhere to lay your head before your grand expedition, there are a number of places in and around Tiverton for you to choose from. The Best Western Tiverton Hotel has 69 en-suite bedrooms and even electric car charging points.
If you want something a touch more dramatic, you could stay at Bickleigh Castle, a 17th century castle, which is a popular wedding venue and has cottages dotted around the courtyard offering B and B services. Or there is Quoit at Cross, a guest house in the centre of Stoodleigh Village with great views and a small friendly village pub within walking distance.
For those wanting a room with a view, Morrells Valley Lodges overlook a valley in the Mid-Devon countryside and is only ten minutes from the M5 so is ideally situated for travellers intending to explore more of Devon. There is even something for the traveller that wants to go off grid for a while, take a look at Bulworthy Project, a luxurious cabin set in its only secluded glade, its handcrafted from wood and is powered by solar, but you will still have access to WiFi and phone chargers, just in case.
Being a large town, Tiverton has a wide range of high street and chain restaurants and cafes to keep you well fed, but there are also several pubs and independent places for you to explore. The Ducks Ditty Bar is a must, as Devon’s only Canal Barge Café Bar you can expect a unique experience and it’s a great excuse to sample the selection of real ales, cold lagers, ciders and wines.
Another place you should visit is Frou Frou, a delightful restaurant located within a 17th century grade 2 listed building serving locally sourced fresh food. The menus even cater for special dietry requirements and serve everything from desserts, lunches and evening meals.
If you’re not sure where to start, make sure to head to the Information Service and get directions and advice on the best places to visit while in town. Some must visits are Tiverton Castle, a key piece of Britain’s history as a base during the civil war and housing many fun activities for the children. The Tiverton Canal Co is home to one of the last horse drawn barges in the country and is a living heritage attraction, you can even take a trip on a horse drawn barge!
Tiverton is also on the West Exe Trail and is part of the Grand Western Canal Cycle Route allowing you to explore at your own pace. It is a truly interesting place with plenty to keep you entertained as your gateway to Devon.
