If you’re the type of person who doesn’t do relaxing holidays, you might be forgiven for thinking that Devon isn’t the destination for you. You are though, completely wrong. Devon has many exciting attractions, making it the perfect place for thrill seekers. Whether you want to try your hand at sailing, tackle some of the waves or challenge yourself at one of the dedicated adventure parks, there is something to suit every dare devil.
Devon is particularly good for water sports.
Surfers can enjoy the waves of both the south and north Devon coasts.
Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are all perfect destinations for the surfer dude among you. There are surf schools available at Saunton and most of the beaches on this stretch of coast have a surf schools, instructors and places to hire equipment if you don’t have your own and plenty of great places to stay while you learn.
If you’d like to try it out somewhere a little more predictable than the open sea, Skern Lodge on the edge of Appledore offer a range of water-based activities including surfing and kayaking, or for those being dragged along that would rather stay on dry land, they have other activities on offer, such as climbing and zip wires.
Kayaking is another fun water-based activity that you can do in various locations. Sea Kayak Devon, based in Dartmouth, makes use of the area’s stunning coastline and gives the opportunity for you to take a guided trip to some of Devon’s more secluded beaches and secret caves, as well as tutorials for those wanting to have a bit more control.
If you’d like to give Kayaking a go, but you don’t have your own equipment, Surfside Kayak Hire in Ilfracombe is your one stop shop for all manner of things to help you on your way! They can also offer instructions and guidance and can give guided tours of the coast line at different times of day, enabling you to experience spotting dolphins, porpoise and seals, plus a wide variety of sea birds.
AS Watersports in Exeter are the perfect place to call in for courses in a range of vessels, including canoes, kayaks and paddleboats, for those wanting something a bit gentler. The canal is a nice easy paddle and is great for families and those wanting to build up their experience.
