Celebrate Devon on 4th June
Devon Day is coming!
Make sure the 4th June is marked in your diaries because Devon Day is coming!
Devon Day is a celebration of everything that is great about the county of Devon and takes place every June on the 4th, also known as St Petroc’s Day, Devon’s Patron Saint. St Petroc, was probably born in South Wales and was a British prince and Christian saint, he primarily ministered to Devon and Cornwall and in Devon, there are seventeen dedications to him, mostly along the coast and one within the old Roman walls of Exeter, as well as featuring in the villages of Petrockstowe and Newton St Petroc.
So, now we know a little more about the saint Devon shares a day with, how can you celebrate the county? The greatest thing is you don’t have to be a resident or even in the county for the day – everyone can get involved! You can mark the day with a Devon Cream Tea, or by trying a Devonshire Crab Recipe for your dinner. One way you can help us celebrate is by reminiscing about all your favourite memories of your Devon holidays, you can send us photos and tag us in your posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
If you are in Devon on 4th June and want to join in the celebrations, you can do so as loads of attractions are holding events to commemorate it.
The Big Sheep are one such place that regularly celebrates Devon Day, Newton Abbot Racecourse has a raceday on the 4th if you’re feeling lucky or if you wanted to experience something more unique, you can head to the Old Kennels for a hand engraving workshop taking place on the 4th and 5th June. Keep an eye on the events page for everything going on in Devon over the day and if you’re in Devon be sure to keep us updated on all the things you’re getting up to!
