We all know that Devon is famous for its fresh sea food and those decadent cream teas, but did you know that we are a haven for celebrity chefs? Big names in the food and restaurant industry flock to this part of the world to use the fabulous local produce in their menus.

One name that’s sure to catch the eye is Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall’s. The TV chef’s original headquarters for River Cottage is in Devon, Axminster to be precise. Aside from being a hub for foodies all over the country, the River Cottage brand also offers a cookery school, hosts regular events and the Axminster base even has a restaurant so you can sample some of the delicious menus making the most of the region’s produce. If you’re at the wrong end of Devon to visit the River Cottage in Axminster, don’t worry, there is another River Cottage Canteen and Deli at Royal William Yard in Plymouth.

Perhaps the most accomplished chef in Devon is Michael Caines. Not content with running restaurants across the region, he also has his own luxury countryhouse hotel and restaurant, Lympstone Manor. You can also catch his food at The Coach House. He was previously at the helm at the Kentisbury Grange Hotel which also boasts a fabulous menu. As well as providing visitors with a fine array of food, Michael Caines also runs regular events across Devon, including workshops where you can pick up on a few tips!
If simple but delicious is more your thing, don’t miss out on award-winning fish and chips at the original Rockfish in Dartmouth from Mitch Tonks. This is a laid-back family restaurant offering a quality twist on the traditional fish and chips. The Seahorse is his other restaurant, which is a little more upmarket and where you can do a spot of celeb spotting! Take a look at some of our interviews with Mitch Tonks and learn the best way to prepare potted crab, a delicacy in Devon.
Because of the amount of chefs flocking to the area, you won’t be surprised to know that Devon hosts a number of food festivals and chefs such as Mark Dodson and Peter Gorton make regular appearances preparing fresh food and hosting workshops.
