No one is denying that Devon is beautiful in the sunshine, but there is something special about watching the seasons change in the countryside. To make sure that you don’t miss out on the opportunities to see Devon in all its autumnal glory, here are a few suggestions.
Firstly, take a look at some of the events taking place at this time of year.
At Pennywell Farm this October you’ll find Grufts, their own version of the famous dog show involving goats to celebrate goat week. If you want to spend time this autumn with goats, you can stay at Knowle Farm, which is set in 44 acres of beautiful countryside giving you plenty of chance to see the leaves and plants change.
A great event to get involved with if you’re keen to see the changing seasons, you have to do the Autumn Colours Estate Tour with lunch, which will take you on a guided tour of the Gidleigh Park estate. You could always make a weekend of it and stay at Gidleigh Park, where you can also experience some wonderful fine dining. Otherwise, Mill End Country Hotel is on the bank of the River Teign which is a great location.
The Exmoor Dark Skies Festival is another great event taking place at this time of year that will see you being surrounded by countryside, as well as the chance to see some awe-inspiring night skies.

Moving into November, you can get involved with a Devon tradition with the Tar Barrel rolling in Otter St Mary. You can really get to grips with the beauty of autumn by staying at Cuckoo Down Farm, a glamping site in the middle of the countryside.
As the seasons change you can be sure that Devon’s restaurants and cafes will offer you some amazing locally grown produce on their menus. Many of Devon’s eateries change their dishes with the seasons guaranteeing you the best dining experience possible.
Bistrot Pierre, in Plymouth, offers amazing French cooking as well as regional classics. The evening a la carte menu changes with the seasons and gives you the best of the area’s produce.

Alternatively, if you’re in Salcombe and fancy seeing the coast at this time of year, you can always grab a bite to eat at Gara Rock where you’ll find dishes made of locally sourced and foraged food. They also offer locally made drinks, such as wine and ale.
After eating some of the amazing regionally sourced food, you might want to walk off a few of those calories with some of Devon’s picturesque trails.

There are some beautiful places to walk around, such as the Stone Lane Gardens located on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Full of trees, you’ll have the chance to see the leaves change colour and with the nearby brook, it will be a perfect peaceful retreat. There are plenty of places to stay in and around the national park, such as Bovey Castle in nearby Bovey Tracey. It’s a luxurious place to stay that is an exciting and adventurous property to go back to after a day exploring.
Another great place to take a stroll during the autumn season is The National Trust’s Plymbrige Woods. You can find it as you walk alongside the River Plym, follow the trail and look over the canal for an unrivalled view. The walk is only a mile-long-walk but the nature of the area is stunning. Boringdon Hall Hotel and Spa is nearby and is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building offering a range of spa treatments, perfect for relaxing.
