When in Devon … do as those in the know do. We caught up with Visit Devon Chair Rhys Roberts, who told us about his perfect day in this beautiful county.
How did you come to be in Devon, Rhys?
I came here some twenty years ago, when my twin brother and I bought the Best Western Tiverton Hotel. I now feel I’m an adopted Devonian and I have always felt a great similarity between the North Wales countryside in which I was born and raised, and the Southwest region where my family and I now live. Today my professional life keeps me busy running the hotel, and our online marketing company Out There. I’m also privileged to lead the board of Visit Devon with a great group of people who, like me, are passionate about local tourism.
What for you is the best thing about Devon?
Its people, unquestionably – they’re generally kind and considerate, and represent some of the best of humanity. The fact that we live in an uniquely beautiful part of the kingdom is both a factor and a privilege.
Tell us about your perfect day in Devon (where anything is possible ..!)
It would be a hot breakfast of haddock and poached eggs on Dartmouth Quay (pictured above), followed by a round of golf at Saunton Sands, a cream tea at The Flying Pickle, Tiverton and finally a delicious dinner with my wife and family in The Pig at Combe … just heavenly.
What’s the best kept secret in Devon tourism?
Take your dog for a walk above the village of Thorverton towards the ancient settlement of Cadbury, and take in the views of the glorious Exe Valley. Or, if you prefer, take a picnic to Exmoor National Park above the coastal town of Lynton (pictured top).
What do you suggest people do in Devon?
Our county is different throughout the year … so, in Spring I suggest fly fishing on the beautiful River Taw at Umberleigh, then in Autumn try walking the Killerton Estate at Broadclyst (pictured above) – the trees on this National Trust estate are simply magnificent. But In winter, for me, its a day’s shooting at Clovelly – a quite unique experience.
