Devon has many hidden treasures to explore. From buried beaches to quaint cafés, discover hidden Devon this autumn.…
The English Riviera
Tucked under Brixham’s harbour, Breakwater Beach boasts beautiful surroundings. With Blue Flag status and a seaside award, Breakwater is one of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera. This hidden gem has disabled access, parking and cafés on its doorstep, making it the perfect setting for a relaxed day out.
For a hidden restaurant with a quirky quality, visit the Hole in the Wall, Torquay’s oldest pub that still bares cobbled floors and low beam ceilings. Here you can enjoy delicious pub fare and great quality Devonshire ales.
South Devon
Experience the life of an old time smuggler at Ness Cove Beach. ‘The smugglers tunnel’ is the main way through to the beach, which was historically believed to be used by smugglers. Snuggled under beautiful cliffs, this hidden cove is perfect for scenic strolls.
For a tasty treat and breath-taking views, stop off at Café ODE at Gara Rock. This cliff top café offers a range of food and drink – from pots of tea to prosecco.
Plymouth
Away from the hustle and bustle of Plymouth’s great high street, you can find the Royal William Yard. It’s impressive architecture and elegant atmosphere makes for a delightful day out. Independent retailers, stylish boutiques and relaxing restaurants can be found along the historic harbour. Arrive by boat, car, ferry or foot to this luxurious location.
Dine in a unique setting at the boathouse café. Located on the Mayflower steps in the fisherman’s arches, this café offers seasonal seaside produce with spectacular views of the harbour.
Exeter and the Heart of Devon
The beautiful village of Broadhembury is perfect for countryside walks and is steeped in local history. This hidden medieval hamlet is traditional and unspoilt, with local shops, tea rooms and pubs to explore.
If you’re looking for a quirky restaurant with irresistible food, visit the Cosy Club, located in Exeter’s hassle free Southern hay. The Cosy Club offers contemporary cuisine and its distinctive décor makes it a restaurant like no other in Devon.
North Devon & Exmoor
Become lost in a garden of tall trees, herbaceous borders and wonderful wild flowers. Docton Mill Gardens is nestled in the Hartland countryside and offers scenic walks and a sense of escapism. Its award winning tea room serves delicious Devonshire cream teas that were voted as the finest in Devon.
Near Barnstaple you will find Fremington Quay Café. Overlooking the River Taw and the Tarka trail, this cosy café offers a menu of locally sourced, home cooked cuisine.
Dartmoor
The old stannary town of Chagford is nestled within the Dartmoor national park and was recently voted as the best place to live in England… With a delicious deli, cosy cafés, pleasant pubs and an outdoor swimming pool, you can really make a day of visiting this charming rural village.
If you’re looking for a traditional pub with a warming atmosphere, visit the Tom Cobley tavern in Spreyton, a hidden country pub which serves local ales and delicious food.
