War Horse on Dartmoor
War Horse was filmed by Steven Spielberg on the beautiful, rolling moorland of Dartmoor. Originally written by Micheal Morpurgo, the story has strong connections with Devon.
While visiting Dartmoor, why not explore some of the fantastic locations used in the film. Meavy, Sheepstor and the renowned landmark of Haytor were just a handful of the picturesque areas that were featured. Dartmoor boasts a wide expanse of scenic walks and has many Idyllic villages offering a unique range of country pubs, shops and cafés to enjoy.

River Cottage HQ in the
Axe Valley
Visit River Cottage HQ in the beautiful Axe Valley. Owned by celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, River Cottage HQ has been widely featured on television. The 17th century farmhouse and kitchen offers delicious local food and seasonal produce.
The renowned cottage runs fun events throughout the year and allows visitors to explore the familiar surroundings on the farm. You can even throw your own event at the famous farmhouse or take a crafty cookery course.

Seaside Drama at Salcombe
Explore Salcombe; the beautiful South Devon seaside town that has recently been the backdrop for a new BBC TV drama that is coming to your screen soon. ‘The Coroner’ is a daytime drama that follows the trials and tribulations of a coroner and a detective.
Keep your eyes peeled for Dartmouth, Totnes and Brixham, which have also been featured in the show. Salcombe has a number of beautiful beaches and coves where you can enjoy scenic strolls and water sports. The town also has a fantastic selection of restaurants offering delicious, local food.

Hartland Abbey’s Blackpool
Mill Cottag
The historic Hartland Abbey and Gardens has made many TV appearances throughout the years, featuring in ‘The Antiques Road show’, ‘The Shells Seekers’ and ‘The Night Manager’.
More famously, Blackpool Mill Cottage of Hartland Abbey was used as Barton Cottage in the BBC’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’. Several weeks were spent filming the series based on the classic Jane Austen novel. The cottage is located next to a gorgeous stretch of beach and is surrounded by beautiful scenery, offering a number of walks and landscape to explore.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot
at Greenway House
In 2013, filming took place at Greenway House in Brixham for ‘Agatha Christie’s Dead Man’s Folly’, which was the 13th and final series of the much loved TV programme, Poirot. Visitors were allowed access to the house whilst the cameras rolled and many had the chance to spot David Suchet playing his fantastic role as Poirot.
Explore the grand house (which was Agatha Christie’s beloved holiday home) and enjoy beautiful woodland walks that wind towards the Dart estuary. There is also a delightful barn café which offers light lunches and delicious cream teas.

Mad hats and Cheshire cats
at Anthony House
Anthony house became the enchanting location for the filming of Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. The beautiful 18th century mansion became the set for the mad but magical film and was bustling with over 400 cast and crew, including famous actors and actresses such as Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
With its charming surroundings and exquisite architecture, the historic house is certainly worth a visit. Take the ferry to Torpoint from Plymouth and enjoy the beautiful surroundings by sea. Anthony house has a fantastic collection of paintings, a grand garden and a cosy café, meaning you can make a day of it.
