If comedy’s your thing, then Devon’s the place to be! With a hilarious programme planned across the region this summer, choose from fun-filled family shows, headline stand-up acts and true comedy legends. Here’s our pick of this year’s Devon comedy.
Dartmouth Shakespeare Week, Dartmouth Castle (4th – 8th August)
What better way to take in the stunning surroundings of Dartmouth Castle than with an open air performance of classic comedy?! Back by popular demand, the RSC associated Inn Theatre Company return with Shakespeare’s wonderfully anarchic comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Shrek the Musical, Theatre Royal, Plymouth (28th July – 16th August)
Based on the award-winning animation film, Shrek the Musical is this year’s must-see family show. Join our unlikely green hero, Shrek, and his loyal steed Donkey as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. Add the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got the biggest, brightest musical comedy around! Feel-good fun, and already a firm family favourite.

Jo’s shrewd observations cover everything from men who continually quote gangster films to re-enacting the world’s worst birthday party! An acclaimed journey through shared social annoyances, hilarious personal anecdotes and plenty of audience participation!

Ken Dodd’s Happiness Show, Princess Theatre, Torquay (5th September)
Revered as one of Britain’s funniest comics, Ken Dodd saw 2014 mark the 60th anniversary of his incredible career as a professional entertainer. Dodd’s classic and unique Happiness show does exactly what it says on the tin, enchanting audiences with non-stop gags, world-class jokes and a selection of songs. You really will be discumknockerated (that’s Knotty Ash for ‘over the moon’) by a truly tattifelarius (fun-filled) evening, presented by this national icon.
