It’s one of our favourite weekends of the year. Great weather (fingers crossed), everyone’s on holiday, and we all want to enjoy the summer’s last hooray. Find out what’s going on across Devon this August Bank Holiday 2014 and make yours go with a bang!
Exeter Phoenix Ale & Cider Festival
August 22-24, Exeter
This fantastic city arts centre cafe will be getting in the bank holiday spirit on these days from 12 noon until late with a range of great St Austell Brewery ales and ciders, a steady flow of live music and guest DJs, and a special food menu. Love ale and cider festivals? Make an Exeter weekend of it and go to the Double Locks Cider and Sausage Festival too (August 23-24, see below). More
Dawlish Air Show
August 22-23
Each year over 80,000 people gather in this lovely family seaside town to watch this award-winning air show, and this year they’ll be treated to displays from the Red Arrows (August 23), a Grob Tutor, Shorts Tucano, Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Avro Lancaster? Whether or not you know your planes … this will be a spectacular display. More
Torbay Week
August 22-27
There’s so much going on in Torbay over the August Bank Holiday (see Torbay Royal Regatta too, below), and it kicks off with Torbay Week on Friday August 22. Against the beautiful backdrop of the horseshoe-shaped bay (great for spectators) you can watch exciting dinghy and yacht races. More

Star Wars at The Milky Way
August 23-24, near Bideford
“I … am your … bank holiday entertainment …” Storm Troopers and other characters from the legendary films will be at The Milky Way between Clovelly and Bideford at this charity event over the August bank holiday weekend. Meet and take pictures with the characters, and enjoy all the usual fun on offer which includes roller coaster rides, indoor dodgems, a brand new area dedicated to interactive fun for those aged 0-6, and shows and activities for the whole family. More
Torbay Royal Regatta
August 23-27
This brilliant 5 day event includes the West of England Rowing Championships (Saturday 23rd from 10am), fireworks (Monday 25th at 9.30pm from Corbyn Head), and a display from the Red Arrows (Wednesday 27th at 6pm weather conditions permitting), as well as a Continental Market running all week in Princess Gardens and the famous Anderton & Rowland Fair in Torre Abbey Meadows from 2pm daily. Railway Gala at Pecorama
August 23-24, near Beer
Full steam ahead … train enthusiasts of all ages will be in their element here. Pecorama’s usual offering of model and ride-on railways with miniature steam locomotives will be made even better on the bank holiday weekend with guest locos including demonstration goods trains, a brass band, face painting and kids’ entertainers. More
Dawlish Fun Day
August 24 12pm–5pm
Enjoy a really traditional seaside day out, with bouncy castles, face painting, stalls and children’s crafts from the WI. More
Kings and Queens at Powerham Castle
August 24-29, near Exeter
Watch the excellent puppet show A Millennium of Monarchs (brilliant for teaching kids about England’s kings and queens), then follow the Kings & Queens Trail around the grounds to win a prize – plus all the usual attractions of lovely Powderham. More
Peppa Pig at The Big Sheep
August 24-25, near Bideford
Tinies will be awestruck when they meet their TV hero at The Big Sheep – and they’ll love all the other fun there too, including rides, animals and shows. To celebrate Peppa’s 10 years of Muddy Puddles there’ll be a children’s party starting at 3pm on both days, plus children’s disco and games – plus personal appearances from Peppa at the party and around the rest of the park too of course. Cider and Sausage Festival at Double Locks
August 23-24, Exeter
Exeter certainly seems the place to be for cider festival fans this bank holiday … This one will be at Double Locks, a brilliant and very popular waterside pub just outside the city that’s accessible only by foot, bike or boat.There’ll be over 50 ciders available plus live music on Saturday evening and Sunday daytime, and a vast selection of sausages to help soak up the cider. More
Lustleigh Show
August 25, mid Devon
A traditional rural village show held in a beautiful spot with live traditional music, delicious food and drink, and an opportunity to learn about rural skills. Where else in the country could you watch bale-wrapping, falconry, terrier racing, human sheep-herding, morris dancers, Punch & Judy? There’ll also be magic shows, horse and dog bshows, children’s fairground rides, a horticultural exhibition, a show bar and stallholders selling local produce, crafts and gifts … real Devon Day Out!
