About

"The Sculpture School is very warm and welcoming…you have a superb studio facility and I’m really looking forward to the next course!"

The Sculpture School is recognised as Britain’s leading centre for mastering the art of realist figurative sculpture. Our courses, led by world-renowned master sculptor, Andrew Sinclair MRSS, offer an inspiring insight into the methods and tools needed to create breathtakingly realistic figures and animals.

You can choose from a number of different options, from 1 day Taste of Sculpture workshops to 4-day courses, all of which are conducted with a student centred, fresh approach. They are suitable for anyone, whether you are a beginner, have some experience or are a professional sculptor. Through demonstrations, group tuition and individual coaching you will transform the way you work and tap into their unrivalled knowledge and experience, unavailable via mainstream colleges and universities. The Sculpture School provides all the bespoke tools, materials and resources you need for each workshop, included in the price.

The choice of 4-day courses include Figurative Sculpture, Portrait Sculpture, Animal Sculpture and Specialist Techniques, focusing on face, feet and hand details and new this year is their Animal Portrait course.
Other options include moulding and casting workshops and bronze casting workshops. Full details of all their courses and workshops are available on their website. They even offer a One Year Course for this who want to immerse themselves in a more intensive course.

As a commissioned sculptor, Andrew is able to offer an insight into the commercial side of the business; with his workshop adjacent to the studio students attending courses are given a tour of a professional sculptor’s workshop which is a rare privilege.

Andrew’s most recent public commissions include the David Bowie sculpture, ‘The Earthly Messenger’ unveiled in Aylesbury in March 2018 and the Duke of Wellington’s ‘Regimental Memorial Sculpture’ unveiled in Halifax in May 2019.

Andrew, along with Diane Coates, founded the Sculpture School in 2010. It came out of a desire to bring their passion alive for a new generation of sculptors and to share their methodology.

Unique to The Sculpture School is the ‘Sinclair Method’ of sculpture, designed by Andrew himself. This innovative method incorporates Design Criteria TM, anatomy and proportion using Dynamic Energy Curves and The Rapid Sketch Technique. Whatever your ability, this ground-breaking system will revolutionise the way you approach sculpture by breathing life and energy into your work. Using this methodology devised by Andrew, you will develop the skills to create stunning works of art. Whether you are a novice or a professional these courses will help unleash your talent and take your skills to the next level. Testimonials from their students say it all: “Andrew is a superb teacher, giving students the feeling that they can achieve their goal with careful guidance.”

The Sculpture School is situated in the idyllic county of Devon, within easy reach of the spectacular and inspirational scenery of Dartmoor National Park and the gorgeous coastline. Situated in a purpose built studio space, all their courses are held in a sanctuary of calm respite, perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about sculpture or to just lose themselves in the inspirational tranquillity of the area. As one student said: “The overwhelming feeling that has stayed with me is that I have just had an uplifting experience in a really friendly environment.”

If you are looking for something special and unique, join one of their courses and be inspired by the art of anatomy as you master their sculpture techniques.

Road Directions

We are located on the main A3124 North Tawton to Winkleigh road, and The Sculpture School is on the left-hand side of the road, opposite the only house (cream) on this hilly switchback road! If you are approaching from the A30, exit at Whiddon Down and follow all the signs to North Tawton and Winkleigh (but don’t go into North Tawton itself). There is a T-junction after the metal bridge with North Tawton in front of you. Turn left at this T-junction. Turn right after the bridge by the mill, towards Winkleigh. Turn right after a mile or so, signposted to Winkleigh, then almost immediately left on the A3124 towards Winkleigh. After the large wind turbine by the Honeychurch sign, you will see our house as you come down the hill situated just after the chevronned z-bend. The Sculpture School is on the left almost opposite the house.

Whatever you do, do not allow sat-nav to take you down tiny single track lanes with grass down the middle!
