The Tamar Trails is an all day attraction for families who love the outdoors. This a child friendly attraction where you can explore the network of woodland trails on bike or foot for free; try some outdoor activities or relax at the Tamar Trails Centre, Café and shop. A great place for family days out whether you are on holiday or live locally. Come and see what we have to offer at this hidden gem in the Tamar Valley on the Devon and Cornwall border.
The Tamar Trails is the hub for outdoor activities in this unique and stunning area of Devon, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and part of the Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Located in the Tamar Valley, just across the river from Cornwall, the venue houses a cafe, shop, heritage centre, plus facilities for walking, running, mountain biking and outdoor activities perfect for group adventures and family days out in Devon or Cornwall.
Walking the Trails
There are over 25km of walking trails for you to explore from the Tamar Trails Centre. These hiking trails will lead you through the woods to breathtaking views of the Tamar valley and a landscape shaped by the area’s mining heritage. Situated between Tavistock and Callington on the Devon Cornwall border, the walking trails are here for everyone to enjoy. Pick up a map from the centre.
Running the Trails
Take a run through the woods on the historic Tamar Trails. Run for as far as you want, on your own or part of a group. We have a specialist trail running shop on site, where you can get professional advice about shoes, training and local running events. Plus each Saturday we host a Parkrun for a free 5km social run.
Biking the Trails and Bike Hire
The Tamar Trails are 25 km of dedicated off-road mountain biking trails to entice families and committed bikers alike. This is a great venue for easy mountain biking in the Tamar Valley, attracting novices and committed mountain bikers from all over Devon and Cornwall. Bike hire is available for £15 upwards for half a day.
The trails are free to use and open all year round, dawn till dusk. There is a parking fee of £2 for the day, and free after 6pm.
Cafe
Eat, drink and relax at the Beech Café.
Situated in a beauty spot high above the Tamar Valley with stunning views across the valley. The perfect spot to meet up with friends and enjoy a coffee or a fantastic lunch before exploring the trails or experiencing activities. The Beech café offers light lunches, afternoon tea and a range of cakes made on site or locally where ever possible. They serve the award winning Origin Coffee roasted in Cornwall for a superb barista experience.

Summer Opening: Every day from 10am to 5pm.
Winter opening: Every day except Mondays. 10am to 5pm.
Shop
The Tamar Trails shop has a beautiful range of gifts for the home, the garden, the outdoors and for dogs – inspired by the Tamar Valley. Pick up a gift for family or friends or take home a memory of the Tamar Valley
Canoe Tamar
Guided family canoe trips on the river Tamar. Join us on the River Tamar… take a scenic paddle from the historic Quay at Cotehele up river, past the village of Calstock and into the wilds of the upper tidal limits.
Our trips are suitable for complete beginners and ideal; for the whole family. Children as young as 3 years old are able to join the trip and there is no upper age limit.
The trips last around 3 hours with about 2 hours on the water, plus a picnic break on the river bank. The trip costs £30 for adults and £24 for under 18's with children under 5 going free.
Tree Surfers Activities
Tree Surfers is a mini adventure for the whole family in the heart of Tamar Trails. This is a day you won’t forget. We have tree top activities suitable for all ages (4 years upwards) located in the stunning Tamar Valley on the Devon Cornwall border. In the top of the trees you'll cross rope bridges, zip lines, walkways and tarzan swings to challenge and excite you. This is no ordinary family day out. It’s a chance for the whole family to escape and have an adventure together. There are four specially designed high ropes courses from Tree Surfers Junior (4 years to 11 years) Tree Surfers (12 years upwards) plus the exhilarating Big Zip – the fastest zip line in Devon and Cornwall. The fun doesn’t stop there. You can also book an archery session with an instructor to test your shooting skills and develop your inner Robin Hood.
Prices for activities range from £10 to £30 per person.
Who can take part?
Junior Tree Surfers Course: 1m or 4 years and over
Tree Surfers Trails: 1.5m and over. Weight limit of 115 kgs.
The Big Zip Wire limits: 6 years upwards. Weight limit of 115kgs.
Archery: 6 years upwards.
* Trails, café and Shop open all year round 10am to 5pm.
Activities are open 10am to 5pm every weekend and every day in the school holidays.
