About Adventure Okehampton
Adventure Okehampton operates two different YHA youth hostels in Okehampton. Since 1997 it has been providing activity residentials for schools and groups as well as providing accommodation to YHA members, families and individuals during the holidays. It is the only YHA Activity Centre in the SW England operating under a franchise arrangement and one of 3 established YHA Activity Centre in England and Wales. Our main ethos is to provide people with chance to experience Dartmoor and to undertake some challenging activities, as “where you stay changes who you become”. Alongside this, the company wants to run their operations in a sustainable way. Since the beginning, the company has employed local staff, used local suppliers and use local materials.
Adventure Okehampton offer over 20 different activities ranging in skills building and stamina building to problem solving. Our most popular activities are Gorge Scrambling, Kayaking, Rock Climbing and High Ropes. We combine 3 activities a day to make 5 different Adventure Days, that allow families and friends to challenge themselves. During the School Holidays we operate public sessions that individuals can book places on and these vary from a Paddle Day, Rock Climbing Day to Multi-activities days. Outside this period you can make a private booking for a group of four or more.
We can cope with group sizes up to 100 people at YHA Okehampton and if YHA Bracken Tor is used as well, this increases capacity to nearly 200. The pricing is dependent on group size, activity package and time period required and whether you are looking for a multiple bookings for different groups over the year.
We offer an NCS programme which is more active and challenging adventure suited to an older age group such as Mountain Biking, Watersports Day, High Ropes, Big Oke Abseil, Archery and other activities depending on group size and transport options.
Looking to progress your canoeing skills, then we run BCU accredited paddle courses at our centre. We also offer a series of days during the summer holidays, for BCU beginners courses. If you’ve got a group of friends or family, or are an organised group, then you can book a session, day or courses on any date that suits you, subject to a minimum group size of 6 Skills awards (part of British Canoeing Union). More advanced courses run during the winter months, and will be dependent on water levels in the rivers.
Other courses include Rock Climbing and Navigation.
There are three accommodation options, the main hostel beside the station is most frequently used for NCS groups, but YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor House (sleeps 36) and Lodge (Sleeps 42) can be booked separately. There is parking at both sites for cars, minibuses and coaches.
Looking for a venue with a meeting room, then consider YHA Bracken Tor. We have various team building facilities on site as well as a large meeting room that can seat 80-120 depending on the layout. This makes it ideal for meetings, team building away days and other types of getaways that require a large room, accommodation with activities on the doorstep.
Weddings on a budget
Looking for a wedding venue but don’t have a large budget, then consider YHA Bracken Tor. You can hire the entire site (including all the accommodation) and grounds for your wedding. Take it for the weekend, and family and friends can help with the planning. Full catering packages can be added and a cash bar. We have an approved external caterer for more extensive menus.
