While we might be in the midst of celebrating the Queen’s jubilee, there is another equally important celebration taking place – Devon Day!

Devon Day falls on 4th June and is the perfect time to celebrate everything that is great about out county – like our incredible seaside towns, the abundance of AONBs and incredible coastline. The Jurassic Coast and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are just two of the reasons why Devon is incredible, so here is the low down of why you should join us in celebrating today.

Firstly, why 4th June?
Well, Devon’s Day is celebrated on the 4th June because that is St Petrock’s Day. He is the patron saint of Devon and who the Devon flag is dedicated to. Historians think he might have originated in Wales, but he was best known for being a minister in Devon and there are references to him all over the county, including in Exeter.

St Petrock is associated with humility, which is a virtue he was said to possess. St Petrock was thought to have travelled the world and brought back teachings from all over, including Rome, Jerusalem and India, where it is said he befriended and tamed a wolf. You’ll find that many images of St Petrock feature him alongside an animal or two – so it is no wonder that the people of Devon love animals so much. In Sidmouth you’ll find a sanctuary for donkeys and nearby in Exmouth and Ottery, there are animal attractions that work to educate about animals, while providing a fun environment.

As we mentioned, there is a Devon Flag, it was designed thanks to a competition run by the BBC and has been used by Devon County Council since 2006 – so if you happen to be in Sidmouth over the Jubilee weekend, you might spot a couple of green flags with a white cross through the middle flying alongside the Union Flag!
