Bike Week is almost here, so we thought we would take a moment to talk about some of our favourite cycle routes in and around Sidmouth.

Bike Week falls on 6th June this year, running through to the 12th June and is the perfect excuse to get out and about and enjoy the outdoors. According to the organisers of Bike Week, which is a national initiative created by Cycling UK, cycling is a great way to boost your immunity and is good for both the environment and your own well-being.

One of the great things about cycling around Sidmouth is that even if you don’t bring your own bike with you, you can still join in by visiting one of the organisations offering cycle hire, who often even stock adapted bikes for those with additional needs, meaning that whatever your ability, you can enjoy a whole new side of Sidmouth.

Being in Sidmouth means you’re close to the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can find a host of wonderful cycling trails. Here are some of our favourite routes locally for you to discover.

Sidmouth Beach Loop

This easy route is good for any level of fitness and skill and features mostly paved surfaces making it a great starting point for anyone wanting to build their confidence before taking on a more challenging route. Start off at the Ford over the River Sid and follow signs around in a loop towards Sidmouth Beach. It’s a great way to take in the sights of the town.

Peak Hill Loop

A slightly more challenging route is this one that loops around Peak Hill from Sidford. Just be aware that there is a section that doesn’t allow cycling, so you will need to dismount and push for that section. Otherwise, start at the River Otter Bike Paths and follow the trail through Otterton and towards Peak Hill. The route will then take you through Sidmouth town centre.

Jurassic Coast Loop

Not one for the faint hearted, this route is mostly paved but is a more challenging option. The route starts at Manor Road Car Park before following the disused railway through Harpford Wood, as you follow the route, you’ll see some incredible views of the Jurassic Coast, especially on your way into Beer. The trail will then take you through Branscombe and back into Sidmouth.

Exe Estuary Route

The Exe Estuary cycle path has lots of great opportunities for cyclists and this route is suitable for all skill levels but can be a bit difficult in places. There is a section where you will need to dismount and other that includes a moveable bridge where you will need to check times before embarking.

Again, this one starts at Manor Road Car Park and takes you through Harpford towards the Exe Estuary Cycle Path. Once you’re on the path, you’ll be taken through nature reserves and areas of outstanding natural beauty until you reach Exeter Quay, which is a good place to stop for refreshments. Towards the end of the route, you’ll come to Peak Hill before returning to Manor Road Car Park.
