Sidmouth’s Dom Bess led the England Cricket team to victory against Sri Lanka last week, registering the best figures of his career, picking up a five wicket haul, ending his run with 5-30.

Despite only being 23 and still having a long career ahead of him, he remained humble when talking to reporters about his victory. Speaking to the Guardian he said: “It’s a proud moment because I’ve taken five wickets for England and no one can take that away from me. I probably haven’t bowled as well as I could have and I got away with one or two but that’s cricket. I’ve also bowled very well on days and haven’t taken any poles.”

Thanks in part to Bess’ performance, England are now in control of the First Test, with Sri Lanka being bowled for 135. His wickets were a key part in England’s domination of the opening day.

His career began in his home town of Sidmouth where he played on the town’s cricket pitch overlooking the beautiful Jurassic Coast. A number of his friends and family still play in the town’s team. Sidmouth Cricket Club was founded in 1823 and remains one of Devon’s best known clubs. The main ground can be found at the Fortfield and has uninterrupted views of the coast, as well as being within easy distance of the esplanade and town centre, making it a great place for holiday makers to play a few games as well as locals. The club have been Premier League Champions a number of times and there are many midweek games throughout the summer open to members and visitors to watch.
