Sidmouth’s town cinema has been chosen to host a preview of the much anticipated film Ammonite, based on the life of Mary Anning, the famous fossil hunter who lived in nearby Lyme Regis and dedicated her life to finding out more about the Jurassic Coast.

The Radway Cinema in Sidmouth will be showing the London Film Festival regional screening of the film, much of which was filmed along the Jurassic Coast, on Saturday, 17th October. Many of the tickets for the premier have already been sold, with pre booking recommended to allow for social distancing.

Ammonite follows the life of Mary Anning, played by Kate Winslet, as she attempts to gain respect from fellow fossil hunters and scientists in a male dominated field. It also stars Saoirse Ronan as geologist Charlotte Muchsion.

Sadly, the film is unable to be shown in neighbouring Lyme Regis as their cinema, which is part of the same company as the Radway, burned down in 2016 and has yet to be rebuilt.

Ammonite is due for general release in November.
