Attractions in Sidmouth

Sidmouth isn’t just its beach or its beautiful countryside surroundings it has plenty of other things to see and do while you’re visiting. Whether you’re interested in exploring the wider Sid Valley or you want to remain in the town for the duration of your stay, you’ll find that there are lots of ways to keep you entertained.  Sidmouth is full of fun attractions perfect for the whole family as well as for those on solo trips or romantic getaways. Award winning attractions 

Sidmouth and the surrounding area are full of attractions that have won awards at national and local levels and once you’ve visited, you’ll see why they are so popular!  

One of the region’s most popular attractions is the Donkey Sanctuary which can be found on the outskirts of the town. The sanctuary is home to over 500 rescued donkeys and mules with everything from farm trails, mazes, nature centres and of course a chance to get to know these lovely, friendly creatures. The onsite kitchen is a particular favourite with visitors and residents alike, especially with their Sunday lunches, make sure to book in early so you don’t miss out!  

East Devon is a real hive of interesting places to visit without having to travel too far. By basing yourself in Sidmouth, you can easily access nearby places like Budleigh Salterton, Honiton, Ottery St Mary and Seaton where you’ll find a host of fun places to spend the day including animal attractions, boat cruises, theatres, golf courses and places managed by organisations such as the National Trust.

Natural playground 

Perhaps one of the main reasons why people flock to Sidmouth is to explore the region’s natural beauty. Being located on the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Jurassic Coast, there are plenty of coastal attractions, such as the beaches and the South West Coast Path to explore. Not only that, but Sidmouth is in the heart of the East Devon AONB, where you can find walking trails, nature reserves and more giving you a chance to get out and about into the great outdoors.  

The town has several parks and green spaces, including the historical Connaught Gardens where you can see a panoramic view of the Jurassic Coast and enjoy the many flower displays and summer time concerts at the park’s band stand.  

Sidmouth’s history 

Sidmouth has a diverse and fascinating history. From being the holiday resort of choice for Queen Victoria’s family during her childhood, to being the base of JRR Tolkien’s holiday home to the heritage walks laid out by the town’s Blue Plaques, there are plenty of ways for you to discover the region’s history. You could also pay a visit to Sidmouth’s town museum, where there are a host of exhibitions to help you pass the time.

Festivals and more 

Sidmouth plays host to a number of popular annual festivals and events throughout the year. The local theatre and other venues have an extensive programme of performances from theatre to panto to musicals to live music and many events also take place in public spaces including the Folk Festival.
