While North Devon is home to several beautiful theatres and performances spaces, sometimes, you have to make use of the natural landscape, which is why you’ll find a variety of open air productions taking place during the summer months. These performances take place at some of the most stunning venues and give you the chance to unroll a blanket, tuck into a picnic and enjoy a night of entertainment.
Some top outdoor performance venues include Hartland Abbey, the National Trust’s Arlington Court, RHS Rosemoor, Tapeley Park and Castle Hill all of which have a programme of open air theatre throughout the summer months. These are often perfect for the whole family and can sell out quickly, so make sure to keep your eyes open for the next performance!
Every year, Barnstaple holds a theatre themed festival which takes place at various locations around the town. Barnstaple’s Fringe Theatrefest brings theatre, dance and live performance to visitors and residents every June and is hugely popular with guests and locals alike. Featuring over 70 shows from across the UK, TheatreFest includes a whole raft of outdoor shows and shows in informal spaces as well as intimate and quirky venues - think Shakespeare on the grass, hi-jinx in the high street, magic in cafes, dancing on benches and much, much more.
Make sure to look out for the full programme so you don’t miss anything!
If a more traditional setting is what you want when you’re seeing a play, whether that is a musical, a piece of intense theatre or a pantomime, there are a number beautiful theatres to be found in North Devon.
One popular theatre is The Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple, which features a choice of entertainment from comedy and music to ballet and classical concerts. Similarly, there is the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe. This is a lively venue hosting a varied programme and advertises regular performances throughout the year.
In Torrington, you can find The Plough Arts Centre which boasts a packed programme of comedy, theatre, dance and cinema performances, as well as screening of productions beamed live from the National Theatre, so you never need to pay West End prices.
