Things to Do in North Devon this January

Welcome to 2020! After the mad rush of the Christmas countdown and North Devon’s New Year festivities, you may be in need of a bit of a respite. Or, you might be more like us - already gearing up for the next event!

However you feel though, there won’t be any January blues here; we’ve got plenty on throughout the month to interest all sorts of people, so keep reading to discover what’s on in North Devon this January.

Week Commencing 6th January

It’s that time of year for RHS Rosemoor to host their incredibly popular Winter Sculpture Exhibit. This exciting event runs until 31st January, with a huge number of brand new artists and incredible pieces against the gorgeous garden setting. Rosemoor themselves describe the display as “Individual creations in a wide variety of media confront visitors with dramatic material statements and challenge them with their enigmatic qualities. The low winter sun, the pale light before snowfall or the careful placement of the illuminations has the effect of highlighting the sculptures.”

You can also learn all there is to Rose Pruning at their comprehensive demonstration on 8th January.

Feel like releasing your inner sleuth? Then The Cedars in Barnstaple are hosting an exhilarating Murder Mystery evening on Saturday 11th January. Dress up (optional), get into the Sherlock mindset and act out your verdict! Can you figure out who the murderer is?

Finally, if you’re interested in discovering the history of Devon’s relationship with cider, join Michael Gee on Friday 10th for an informative talk on “Devons Orchards: How Devon took to cider”.

Week Commencing 13th January

It’s finally here, the long-awaited ‘Something Old Something New’ annual wedding fayre hosted by The Milky Way Adventure Park. Their unique, DIY venue, The Old Barn offers a delightfully rustic wedding venue option for couples looking to tie the knot. Book a slot on 19th January and say hello to some of Devon’s finest wedding professionals.

Those interested in WWII have the opportunity to join rangers and experts from North Devon AONB’s coastal project on 15th January to explore and reveal the foundations of the WWII radar station. Finding RAF Northam starts at 10am and booking is essential.

Is your New Year’s resolution to keep fit? Then join NDRR on 19th January for one of their oldest and most popular races through Braunton. Designed to test the legs and spirit, kickstart your New Year with the wind in your hair!

Week Commencing 20th January

We’re back to RHS Rosemoor this week for a practical demonstration of Apple Pruning on 21st January. Remember to bring warm clothes, boots and get stuck in!

Fancy a bit of jazz? Then head over to The Beaver in Appledore on 20th January to experience another of their exceptional jazz evenings. This time they’re joined by the Xhosa Cole Quartet from 8:30pm

From 25th January you’ll be able to take an exclusive look at Snowdrop Valley, a privately owned remote valley in a hidden part of Exmoor close to Wheddon Cross. The Badgworthy Land Company kindly allow access to the valley while the beautiful carpet of snowdrops is in bloom. Simply stunning.

If you’re in the mood to be entertained then The Plough Arts Centre have a myriad of exciting events this week including blues from Paul Jones & Dave Kelly on 23rd January, the phenomenally talented Steve Knightley from Show of Hands on 24th January and The Unravelling Wilburys on 25th January.

Week Commencing 27th January

It’s time to round off January in style! Fans of Robbie Williams will be entertained over at The Pier House’s tribute night on 31st January.

With so much on, it’ll be impossible to mourn the festive period! We can’t wait to get stuck into the next month of activities.
