West Down is an AA award winning farm guest house providing superb dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation in Glorious North Devon. Optional superb home cooked evening meals are freshly prepared using produce from the guest house gardens wherever possible and meat, fish and dairy products from trusted local West Country suppliers. Special diets and requirements are well catered for, Brenda is happy to discuss these with you prior to your visit to make sure that you are confident that your needs are fully met and that your stay is an enjoyable one.
The guest accommodation is beautifully appointed and decorated with lots of attention to detail to make your stay at West Down as comfortable as possible. All rooms are ensuite with large bedrooms, remote control colour TVs and hostess trays stocked with West Country teas, coffees and biscuits. Two new ground floor rooms are available with direct wheelchair access from the car park for those with restricted mobility. One of these benefits from wheelchair access directly into the bedroom room which has a large shower wet room. Roger maintains the acres of flat, gently sloping gardens and grounds with ponds and water features as well as growing fruit and vegetables for the kitchen and producing a constant supply of flowers for the guest house.
Public rooms are on the ground floor and consist of a conservatory / dining room with individual dining tables for you to enjoy AA award winning West Country breakfasts and wonderful evening meals served with a complimentary glass of wine. The conservatory also has a relaxed seating area overlooking the garden and ponds which regularly host a variety of birds including woodpeckers, great tits, chaffinches and many more that come to feast on the bird feeders. There is also a very cosy lounge with a log burner for the cooler evenings in which to relax with sumptuous deep leather chairs, ideal after a hearty evening meal especially if you have been exploring the delights of Glorious North Devon during the day.
West Down is situated in Glorious North Devon on the edge of Exmoor National Park, an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and close to the wild Atlantic coastline with its rugged cliffs and miles of sandy Blue Flag beaches such as Croyde Bay, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands. Coastal villages such as Clovelly, Hartland Point, Westward Ho!, Appledore, Instow, Ilfracombe, Lynton, Lynemouth and Porlock are within easy driving distances from West Down and make for great exploration in all seasons. Many of the coastal towns have working harbours providing facilities for local and visiting sailors and where you might also see local fishing boats unloading catches from our own Marine Conservation Area around the island of Lundy. Lundy Island is well worth visiting accessed by the MS Oldenburg ferry service from Ilfracombe and Bideford in the summer season or by the helicopter service from Hartland Point in the winter season.
Inland, the North Devon historic market towns and villages such as Barnstaple, Bideford, Umberleigh, Torrington and South Molton provide for hours of exploration due to their quaint lanes full of antique shops and independent coffee shops brimming full of home backed cakes and of course Devon Cream teas. Just be careful to make sure that you place the jam and cream on the scone in the right order or you might be frog marched across the border into Cornwall. Many towns have weekly pannier markets selling local produce, antiques and bric-a-brac which make for interesting browsing.
National Trust stately homes and grounds such as Arlington Court and Dunster Castle as well stately gardens such as RHS Rosemoor, Marwood Hill and Tapeley Park Gardens offer incredible opportunities for exploration before returning to West Down for a well-earned award-winning evening meal.
