A mile down a single track lane and originally the Gamekeepers Cottage on the Stucely Estate, Old Keepers Cottage is a charming, character, country property set in 35 acres of fields and woodland and overlooks the tidal River Torridge with stunning views of the valley and countryside beyond. Although only 2 miles from Bideford, guests will feel as if they have stumbled across an oasis of peace and tranquillity with wild Roe deer regularly strolling past and an abundance of birdlife.
For those who enjoy walking there are lovely woodland paths from the house down to the river where you can watch birds on the saltmarshes or grey mullet turning in the river, so bring your wellington boots, fishing rods and binoculars to take full advantage of our unique location!
We are a small family run Bed & Breakfast and have 4 bedrooms (two of which interconnect to make a family suite)
All of our bedrooms are on the first floor and, apart from the Old Nursery, can accommodate an extra fold up bed or travel cot if required. All rooms have complimentary tea/ coffee/ water/biscuits and chocolates with a kettle and nespresso machine. Guests can help themselves to fresh milk from the kitchen fridge at any time.
We have plenty of free parking and secure lock up for bikes.
Lundy passengers can take advantage of our free parking while away and transfer to Bideford Quay plus pick up on return when possible.
A large old oak door opens into a homely beamed kitchen with an Aga and the family dog usually asleep in his bed alongside. There is a spacious sitting room with log burning stove for guests’ personal use and outside a fabulous terrace with seating for those who want just sit quietly and take in the glorious North Devon scenery. There is also a separate guest entrance.
The Garden View Double is a pretty room which overlooks the garden and woods. It is not Ensuite and has a separate private bathroom with whirlpool bath on the ground floor just at the bottom of a flight of 10 stairs. Please note that this room is probably not suitable for those who find stairs difficult.
The Old Nursery Twin is our smallest cosy, room which looks out onto the courtyard and fields beyond where our horses graze. Due to its size it is can’t accommodate an extra fold up bed. It has the same bathroom arrangement as the Garden Room. These 2 rooms are only let out together when guests know each other and are happy to share the bathroom.
The River View Room - Our largest room with windows on 3 walls giving panoramic views of the river, countryside and the terrace. It has an ensuite bathroom overlooking the garden as well as a dressing room. Sit in the antique wooden king size bed with your morning cup of tea and enjoy the views.
The Blue Room is our second largest bedroom and is light and airy with two large windows. It is also ensuite and can be set up as either a Super King or Twin. It overlooks the river and woods on one side and the main front lawn on the other.
Family Suite - Interconnecting with the Blue Room or the River View Room is our Four Poster Double room which can be combined to make a family/ friends suite sleeping up to 5. It also has fabulous river views and is suitable for those happy to share a bathroom as those sleeping in the four poster room will have to walk through either the Blue Room or River View dressing room to gain access to it.
An extensive breakfast menu is available using locally sourced ingredients and guests can enjoy a delicious complimentary home-made Devon Cream Tea on arrival.
We are well placed to explore the many attractions of North Devon whether it is walking along the South West Coast Path, Cycling on the Tarka Trail, playing golf at the Royal North Devon Golf Club, visiting RHS Rosemoor or building sandcastles on one of our beautiful stretches of sandy beaches.
