Lower Hearson Farm is a small family run farm set in fifteen acres of gardens, field and woodland. We run the farm on a small scale aiming to be as self sufficient as possible in fruit, vegetables and meat. Depending on the time of year that you come here you will see life on a small farm with sheep, lambs, traditional breed chickens (Copper Black Maran, Cuckoo Maran, Welsummer and Light Sussex), chicks and rare breed Oxford Sandy and Black pigs and piglets. We are members of the British Pig Association and The Oxford Sandy and Black Society. We have a strong commitment to rearing animals in as natural a way as possible.
Our aim is to make sure that that you have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in your cottage whilst staying with us. We are always on hand to offer advice on where to visit enabling you to fully enjoy all that North Devon has to offer. You are more than welcome to join in with looking after the animals. Adults and children alike always enjoy helping us at feeding times for the animals, helping to collect the eggs and rounding up the chickens when it is their bedtime. Don’t forget your wellies!
Well behaved dogs are also welcome. As this is a working farm with livestock dogs must be kept under control at all times. There are walks from your cottage into the surrounding countryside along with the many dog friendly beaches and coastal paths a short drive away.
Have an alfresco meal or a cup of tea or even a gentle rest in the gardens surrounded by beautiful birdsong. Look out for the returning swallows and swifts when they start to return. They appear every year around the 17th April after their 4,000 mile journey back from South Africa to raise their young in our barns, outbuildings and cottage eaves. Why not take a stroll around the farm through field, ancient woodland and lane enjoying the countryside views, our animals and the wildlife or wander along the local lanes and paths through the stunning scenery.
There are several walks around here that can be enjoyed just by stepping out of your holiday cottage doorway. Look out for some of the many different species of birdlife here or try to catch a glimpse of some deer in the fields or woods. Watch the bees, busy in the hedgerows gathering their nectar to take home to their hives. Enjoy the soft, sweet scented air so special to Devon. There is a folder in each cottage full of leaflets giving details of the vast number of sights, attractions and places to visit during your holiday here in North Devon. The cottages also have walking books containing various routes so that you can really explore and enjoy North Devon during your holiday covering both countryside and coastal walks in North Devon and Exmoor.
