Hole Station in Devon – the holiday destination for those seeking peace and tranquillity.
Hole Station is set in a 50 acre private woodland and meadow nature reserve and has been offering a place for those seeking relaxing camping holiday breaks since 2009, in a unique woodland setting. And new from 2019 – a restored 1920's vintage Norwegian railway carriage, the Bluebell. Hole Station was once a railway station on a long closed former country line, most of which is now better known as the Tarka Trail, which is a traffic free cycle route so definitely bring your bikes. The line was built by the light railway specialist Colonel Stephens, also responsible for the Ffestiniog railway.
Hole Station is an 18+ adult only establishment (that doesn't mean naturist, it just means no kids) so it's perfect for a quiet getaway – a high proportion of our visitors are mums and dads looking to get away for some grown up time! There is a cafe on site, open during the camping season for yummy home cooked breakfasts (including vegetarian) and where you can order from a selection of Liz's home cooked evening meals that just need heating – then eating!
The Bluebell Railway Carriage Self Catering Holidays at Hole Station.
The Bluebell is a lovely holiday option, offering spacious, private, luxurious self catering accommodation for up to four people, with 2 bedrooms, each with it's own en-suite, a sitting room and kitchen diner.
Located on Platform 1 next to the station, this is very private accommodation, overlooking a wild flower meadow across to woodland viewed from your private platform. The platform also features a firepit if you would like to spend the evening enjoying a blazing log fire in the open whilst gazing up at the stars, and with there being no pollution here what an amazing view of the heavens you get on a clear night.
Decorated in art deco style, the carriage features many original features from when it first took to the track traversing the fjjords of it's native Norway – it's quite unique, one of only two of these carriages in the UK.
Camping at Hole Station - for Camping Connoisseurs.
The campsite is set in a 23 acre woodland, with pitches in clearings, it couldn't be more different to camping in a field. Because Hole Station is adults only, rest assured you won't be woken at silly o'clock by kids using your tent as a goalies net, and because we don't accept bookings even remotely resembling stag or hen parties you can truly take some chill time.
Campfires are encouraged because let's face it wouldn't be proper camping without one, and every pitch has a fire pit on it. Sacks of logs, kindling and firelighters are available from reception as a 'kit', you just need to bring matches, and tripod grills are available for hire if you want to try open fire cooking – it's all huge fun!
There are two options for camping, BYO where you bring your own kit, and Rent a Tent where pretty much everything you need apart from bedding is provided. The Rent a Tent option also includes a fully equipped safari style shelter.
Out and About.
There is plenty to do locally, our website has links to many suggestions for activities and days out. Being equidistant between Dartmoor and the sandy beaches of North Devon and Cornwall, you could quite easily be taking a dip in the Atlantic in the morning and be atop a Dartmoor Tor in the afternoon – with plenty of time to fit a cream tea in too!
