Catboat Cottage

About

Our spacious 200-year-old fisherman’s cottage has been lovingly restored, retaining many period features including exposed beams and historical fireplaces. Many of the beams are believed to have originated from old ship’s timbers.

Exposed walls and fireplaces, constructed of cob and timber tell a historical tale of up-cycling. These architectural anomalies along with original floorboards and sash windows preserve this cottage in its own time capsule.

Our coastal retreat is endowed with history and old-world charm, whilst offering every modern convenience and comfort.  Just a stone’s throw from the beach; listen to the waves lapping up the slipway as you drift off to sleep.

Larger groups can book all four bedrooms to include the ground floor bedroom and en suite. Smaller groups can request the three first floor bedrooms, one with en suite plus a family bathroom. We cater for younger guests providing a cot and highchair, saving you space on your journey.

Appledore's ever-changing estuary means no two days are the same.  This, coupled with the slower pace of life induces a wonderful relaxing ambience.  Meander through the historic lanes, admiring the brightly painted cottages and visit the independent shops and galleries. Residents exhibit a vast range of arts and crafts, from jewellery, photography, furniture and ceramics.

Self-cater using the fully equipped kitchen with locally sourced produce and home-made food from the delicatessen in the village.  Or eat out from a huge choice of restaurants and pubs within a couple of minutes’ walk, some with views over the estuary.

Home to the annual Book Festival, inviting famous writers, politicians, and broadcasters to give talks.  The Regatta, a vibrant event where gig boat crews race along the estuary to cheering spectators. There’s a choice of fishing and boat trips including the seasonal ferry over to Instow.

Younger visitors wonder at crab fishing on the Quay, investigating rock pools by the lifeboat station or beachcombing along the estuary shore.  Whether you are young, or young at heart, there is always something that appeals in this lively coastal village.

Westward Ho! blue flag beach, surf school, and the Gold links golf course are only three miles away.  Instow Beach is five miles, or you could hire a beach hut at the infamous Saunton Sands. The nearby Tarka Trail cycle route with bike hire is a perfect day out.

Family days out: The Milky Way, Clovelly, Gnome Reserve, Big Sheep, Dinosaur Park and Watermouth Castle.

History lovers: Hartland Abbey, Arlington Court and Tapeley Park.

For gardeners: RHS Rosemoor, Marwood Hill Gardens, Docton Mill, Castle Hill Gardens, all just a short drive away.

We welcome guests for weekends, short breaks and longer weekly or fortnightly holidays, including Christmas and New Year.

A Minimum stay is 3 nights, with flexible arrival days outside of school holidays.

For cooler months, Catboat Cottage has central heating included.

Email or call Holly to chat through options for your stay. We look forward to welcoming you to relax and make some happy memories at Catboat Cottage.
