Chawleigh Walk 2

Start Your Walk

Set off north along the main street towards Chulmleigh, taking in scenic countryside views. At Hollowtree Cross, bear right and follow the lane for ¼ mile before turning left onto a field path. Enjoy breathtaking views of Exmoor, especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms.

Dartmoor Views & Rolling Valleys

Cross the road, passing a bungalow, and follow the field edge towards Dartmoor’s tors, including Cosdon Hill and High Willhays, Dartmoor’s highest peak. Descend into a picturesque valley, where a stream joins the River Taw, with bright yellow gorse in full bloom during spring.

Through Woodlands & Historic Ruins

Continue through a woodland path, where daffodils surround tranquil ponds in spring, and buzzards circle overhead. As you ascend, listen for trains on the Tarka Line, made famous by Tarka the Otter. Across the valley, spot the ruins of Eggesford House, once a grand 19th-century mansion.

The Final Stretch

Pass through ancient oak trees and wildflower-filled hedgerows, home to butterflies like the peacock. Cross a stile onto a quiet country lane with classic Mid Devon views. Turn left at Southcott Cross, then follow the road back into the village, completing this scenic and historic circular walk.

A Walk for Everyone

Perfect for families, history lovers, and nature enthusiasts! Enjoy the mix of history, wildlife, and stunning landscapes along the way.
