Places to Stay in Ottery St Mary

Full of thatched cottages, narrow streets and traditional West Country events, a stay in Ottery St Mary is the perfect way to really immerse yourself in Devon life. You can find some lovely countryside cottages with a real home-from-home atmosphere or in the wider East Devon area, there are a host of other accommodation options.

Romantic hideaways

As The former home of romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and surrounded by the amazing East Devon countryside, Ottery St Mary is a lovely destination for a romantic get away. The River Otter creates the ideal atmosphere for walks and with trails leading you to nearby Budleigh Salterton, you’re not too far away from a seaside resort. If the location isn’t inspiring enough, Ottery St Mary continues several traditional events that you can’t find anywhere else in the country, including the legendary Tar Barrel Rolling for Bonfire Night and Pixie Day, where the village’s residents relive the day they banished the pixies! The village may also feel familiar to Harry Potter fans, as it was the inspiration behind Ottery St Catchpole in the books.

Enjoy a farm stay

Being surrounded by so much countryside, Ottery and the surrounding towns and villages are a good destination for anyone wanting a farm stay. These are a great way to enjoy a break in Devon as they give you the chance to live like a local, sample the freshest of seasonal foods by picking your own eggs in the morning and of course, if you visit in the spring time, the chance to befriend some very cute and cuddly lambs!

It isn’t just cottages and farmyards on offer either, on the outskirts of the village you’ll find country inns offering bed and breakfast and a host of other guesthouses and hotels to suit every budget and taste.
