Things to Do in Chagford
With Dartmoor right on the doorstep, Chagford is a haven for anyone who loves being outside and having an adventure or two. There are a whole host of walking trails, cycle trails and other activities on offer all across and around the town – so you’re never short of things to do.
Enjoy the outdoors
Chagford is one of the best places on Dartmoor to enjoy a spot of birdwatching, and at different times of the year, you can find a variety of species including birds of prey, skylarks and grouse. Nearby there is also a large reservoir with a number of interesting ducks and water birds to look out for.
As well as bird watching, you can also enjoy several cycle routes, bridleways and rural lanes leading into Dartmoor with both self guided and guided walking tours available.
Local history
As a former stannery that dates back to the Saxon times, Chagford has plenty of interesting places of local history to experience. The historic church can be found at the centre of the town and is believed to date back to the 1200s. From the town you can also easily reach other local historical attractions, including the Dartmoor Prison Museum and National Trust properties.
Visitors can also participate in the traditional sport of Letterboxing which has taken place on Dartmoor for generations. It is a great way to explore the National Park and combines treasure hunting with orienteering and puzzle solving. You simply have to explore the moor looking for small boxes which are hidden in cracks and crevices and usually contain a small visitors book and a stamp.
Chagford is also home to the largest freshwater swimming pool in the south west. The pool’s water comes from a small stream off the main river, which is filtered and cleaned as per modern regulations. The original pool was dug by hand by local residents and to this day makes a great afternoon activity in the sunshine. The water’s temperature is brought up by the use of solar covers and there is even a dedicated toddler’s area complete with toy boats, so everyone can join in the fun!
