The family were Lords of the Manor back in the day and Sir William was said to be involved in the murder of Thomas Beckett at Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. Other places of historical interest include the Riverside Mill in the centre of town which is now home to MAKE SouthWest, who were formerly the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and Cromwell’s Arch which is all that remains of a former monastery which once served as the headquarters of the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War.
