Autumn in Devon

When you think of holidays in Devon, no doubt you picture bright blue skies and sunbathing on the beach. If that’s the case, you might not know just how stunning Devon is during the autumn months. With the countryside turning golden and russet as the leaves change and the coastline taking on a more dramatic feel, an autumn break in Devon is just as relaxing, just as memorable and just as filled with fun as one in the summer!

Something new with every season

With Devon’s incredibly diverse landscape, every change in season brings something new and interesting to see and do. The countryside, National Parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor and the woodland and open country change with each passing month, allowing you to indulge in those amazing warm colours of autumn, spy the seasonal birds and enjoy the changing plants. Not only that but being located in the southwest, Devon has a milder microclimate than most of the UK, so even in the autumn you can guarantee that the weather will be warmer than other areas of the country.

A fresh new flavour

While we all love fish and chips on the beach and a Devonshire cream tea in the sunshine, nothing beats Devon’s fresh, seasonal food and drink and the autumn months mean a whole new set of exciting dishes to try. From warming comfort food in the region’s pubs and restaurants to spicy apple cakes to accompany your tea when you stop at a café, there is always something new to try, whatever the season.

Things to do in the autumn

You might think that you’re limited on things to do in Devon during the autumn months, but you’d be wrong! Autumn and winter are a great time to perfect your surfing as the waves get bigger and stronger during this time of year.

If you like a bit of a scare, why not try some of the amazing Halloween-themed events taking place across the county in the autumn or join a city tour or ghost walk around one of the region’s heritage properties? Or you could always visit a Devon vineyard or distillery and learn more about how your favourite drinks are made now that the harvest season is upon us. Whatever you are into, you’ll be able to find an activity to keep you entertained while in Devon this autumn.

Amazing accommodation

The autumn months are generally quieter, especially in the more popular resort areas of Devon giving you much more choice when it comes to the perfect accommodation than in the summer. From cosy cottages complete with log burners and hot tubs perfectly positioned for watching the sunset to luxurious hotels with all the comforts you would expect and a few more. There really is a never ending choice of amazing accommodation just waiting for you in Devon.
