Visit our luxury self-catering holiday cottages in the heart of Exmoor’s National Park. Wintershead has a truly stunning, remote location, close to the Devon-Somerset border and easily accessible from the North Devon link road. If you’re looking for holiday accommodation where you can really get away from it all and relax in quality, well equipped cottages full of cottages in beautiful moorland, then this is you perfect destination.
Wintershead is in a remote location in the heart of Exmoor. Set in 11 acres of beautiful grounds, it is no longer a working farm, but is surrounded by farmland and the open moor. Although set in a wonderfully isolated spot, there is plenty to do, there are many villages, pubs and restaurants to enjoy in the vicinity. The village of Simonsbath is only 3 miles away and Exford, a further 5 miles. South Molton is a delightful country market town about 10 miles away and there are several country pubs offering excellent food all within a short distance from Wintershead.
Wintershead is a great base for exploring Exmoor and the surrounding area. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the close proximity of the open moorland and horse riders will find miles of bridleways to explore. We can provide facilities for people wanting to bring their own horses, or there are many stables in the area that hire out horses for the day. If you prefer to travel by car, the spectacular coastlines of Devon and Cornwall are within easy driving distance, including the popular surfing beaches of Woolacombe, Putsborough and Croyde.
Our holiday cottages have all be converted from the original farm buildings to a very high standard. Our aim is to provide guests with comfortable self-catering cottage accommodation while still retaining the charm and character of the original buildings. The cottages surround a large courtyard providing guests with plenty of parking spaces. Some cottages even have panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. All cottages are centrally heated, with comfortable beds and well-equipped kitchens. There are comfortable sofas and colour TVs in the lounge area with DVD players in some of the cottages.
Whether you’re on a romantic break or going away for a family holiday, we have several cottages that would suit ranging from 1-3 beds, with room to sleep up to 6 people for bigger groups. There is a laundry room for guest’s use and a games room with pool and table tennis. The summer months are a particularly good time to visit, with the rural location and light evenings, you’re perfectly placed to see Devon’s diverse wildlife, with many species of birds, as well as other moorland and woodland creatures roaming around in the evenings and early mornings.
This part of Devon is great for walking holidays with over 100km of rights of way to explore. The nearby Exmoor National Park runs a series of guided walks with wildlife or historic themes. Cycling and Mountain Biking are also great to experience in this part of the country, there are exhilarating mountains and more gentle routes for you to visit. Bikes can be hired at the start of the Tarka Trail, which is nearby.
This is also one of the best horse riding areas in England, there are miles of bridleways and open moorland to explore and there are many riding centres near Wintershead offering escorted rides across the moor, catering for all abilities. There are stables on site for those wanting to bring their own horses.
North Devon also offers fantastic fishing, surfing and body boarding facilities, as well as a whole manner of other water sports. Devon’s beaches are a surfers paradise and there are many rivers and small lakes for those who enjoy a spot of fishing.
