Nestled in a tranquil haven on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park and along the banks of the River Dart, Buckfast Abbey’s Northgate House Hotel has all the ingredients for the perfect stay. It offers perfect seclusion and is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. There is a choice of 33 comfortable rooms, making it a good choice for business travellers and visitors to the Abbey Church, along with groups taking part in activity holidays, such as canoeing, rambling and fishing.
If you prefer a little more independence, there are three self-catering houses offering flexibility to families and larger groups, with the option to take evening meals at Northgate House or cook in the well-equipped kitchens. Both three and Four bedroom cottages come with private gardens and exceptional views of the Abbey’s grounds and Dartmoor. Our attentive accommodation team will be on hand to look after guests ensuring they leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
Conveniently situated just off the A38 Devon Expressway, the Abbey is easily reached from Plymouth, Exeter and surrounding areas.

For those staying on business, we have a truly unique conference venue on site, catering up to 150 delegates, with advanced audiovisual technology, onsite catering and a dedicated team of event professionals to ensure your event is memorable for the right reasons.
For those on a relaxing break, take time to visit Buckfast Abbey our working Benedictine monastery. The interactive Monastic Way Exhibition features stunning special effects and wide-screen film, the displays provide a fascinating insight into the Christian life of monks who follow the rule of St Benedict.
Buckfast Abbey’s grounds and four themed gardens are a haven for wildlife and visitors throughout the year. The Sensory Garden is alive with colour the Physic Garden is busy with bees and butterflies, enjoy the scented air in the Lavender Garden and take in our award winning Millennium Garden. Garden events and workshops run throughout the year – and the hugely-popular Garden Fayre in June attracts thousands of visitors.
The Abbey’s gift shop sells a range of items made by monks and nuns in the UK and further afield, whilst the bookshop has publications for adults and children. Buckfast Abbey’s innovative Education Department runs family craft and story-telling events.
Music plays an important part in the life and worship of Buckfast Abbey: The monks celebrate the Divine Office and Mass daily in the Abbey Church. Many of these services are open to the public.The Abbey Church also hosts a range of concerts and recitals. The Abbey Choir has an outstanding reputation. The stunning acoustics of the church have been further enhanced by the installation of a Ruffatti organ, made in Italy.
The Grange Restaurant commands panoramic views of the Abbey and its grounds. It’s open for breakfast, lunch and snacks and plays host to an annual Food and Craft Fair along with pre-concert dinners on selected dates. Coach visits are welcome all year round (closing only on Christmas Day), offering friendly hospitality to all who visit. Booking ahead really helps to ensure your requirements are attended to well, enabling your party to relax and enjoy their visit.

By Road Buckfast Abbey is 0.5 miles from the A38 Devon Expressway, midway between Exeter and Plymouth.
By Rail The nearest stations are Newton Abbot 11 miles and Totnes 6.6 miles, both only 20 minutes drive from the Abbey.
Exeter Airport 23 miles away from the Abbey.
By Bus The local bus service, Stagecoach number 88, operates from Newton Abbot and Totnes to Buckfast. There is also a coach service between Exeter and Plymouth which stops in Buckfastleigh. The Abbey is a half-mile walk.
Entrance and parking is FREE and there is easy access to all facilities.
