Baggy Point-DD

This coastal section comprises the headland of Baggy Point with the northern and southern margins of Croyde Bay and is a SSSI. The geology comprises of sandstones, shales, siltstones and thin limestones, of Devonian age (417-354 million years ago) deposited in a marine dominated environment to brackish and even non-marine depositional setting. The area is also famous for a number of large glacial erratics unique in south west England, including one boulder of pink granite at Saunton that weighs 12 tons; the nearest outcrop of similar rocks occurring in Western Scotland. Above the cliffs there are areas of dense gorse and, in places, species-rich maritime grassland and heathland.
