Raleigh's Roots - Walk

Start/End point: Woodbury Castle car park, off the B3180 (Grid Ref: SY033877).

This route crosses The Commons, one of East Devon's rare pebbled heathlands, and passes explorer Sir Walter Raleigh's birthplace.

Rich in wildlife, the heath offers wonderful views to the Exe estuary, along the coast and out to Dartmoor and Exmoor.

The route begins and ends at Woodbury Castle, a prehistoric hillfort, occupied between 500BC and 300BC. Its circular ramparts were once topped with stakes, while inside was a permanent settlement of wooden houses.

Facilities along route: Refreshments are available in the pubs in nearby Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton.
This route is suitable for all, but please note that there are 3 stiles. There are no strenuous ascents or descents. Footpaths and quiet lanes. This walk should take roughly 2 to 3 hours for the average walker.
