The amphibious Sherman tank at Torcross car park is a memorial to the 946 men who died during Exercise Tiger in April 1944, when German E boats (high speed torpedo boats) made a surprise attack on landing craft. Retrived from the sea in 1984, the Sherman is often decked with flags and flowers.

This walk also visits Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake noted for wildfowl, and separated from the sea's fury only by a four-kilometre ridge of pebbles washed in from the Channel.

This route is suitable for anyone fairly fit. The route consists of quiet footpaths, country lanes and coast path. Several ascents and descents (none arduous), muddy after rain. This route should take roughly 3 to 4 hours for the average walker.
