Heritage and History
 reduced.jpg)
The history and heritage of Devon is as rich and varied as its landscapes. Traditions abound and some interesting characters are associated with the county as well as important historical finds. With two coastlines and its strategically important position, Devon has been a focus of maritime history for centuries. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth for the new world, Sir Francis Drake originated from Tavistock and often sailed out of Plymouth Sound and the Britannia Royal Naval College stands prominently above the river Dart at Dartmouth.
Inland, Kents Cavern, a Palaeolithic dwelling with spectacular rock formations was the site for the discovery of some of the oldest human remains in northern Europe. In North Devon Clovelly, with its cobbled car-free streets and ancient harbour, stands relatively unchaged with careful upkeep retaining its natural charm.
There are numerous stately homes rich in history to discover, some still privately owned such as Powderham Castle and Hartland Abbey and castles that once protected Devonians from outsiders such as Dartmouth Castle. Explore buildings that have stood the test of time such as Exeter Cathedral and the Tudor dwellings of Totnes or interact with period of history at the various attractions and museums like Morwellham Quay where you are transported back to the busy inland port of the 1860s.
