Trails in Devon

Devon is home to 50,000 acres of nature reserves, 210 Sites of Scientific Interest, 1 UNESCO Biosphere, the Jurassic Coast, the only UNESCO Urban Geopark in the world, 33,000 miles of hedgerow and more cottages than anywhere else in the UK.

What better way to come and explore Devon and it's unique features than by walking, cycling or horse riding one of our many trails?

If cycling takes your fancy then there are plent of routes to choose from both on and off the National Cycle Network (NCN), whether you are looking for a gentle, leisurely ride or something a little more extreme, there is something for everyone.  Cycle routes in Devon follow coast paths, country lanes, river sides and much more allowing you to explore Devon at the same time as being active.  If you don't have a bike with you, there is still no excuse, there are plenty of cycle hire shops along the cycle routes including Route 2 Cycle Hire Cafe at Topsham on the family friendly, river Exe route, NCN 2.   For the more experienced cyclist the Coast to Coast route is quite a challenge with amazing views along the way.

Walking is another popular activity in Devon, with the South West Coast Path being one of our biggest natural attractions.  Along the South West Coast Path you will come across the Jurassic Coast in East Devon and the worlds only Urban Geopark on The English Riviera in South Devon as well as many more breath-taking sights.  Bridal paths and other footpaths can also be found in abundance throughout the countryside where metal detecting and berry picking are very popular. Devon's cultural trails are quite spectacular for all levels of experience. For the dedicated walker, Two Moors Way stretching for 100 miles is a memorable experience, with many towns and villages passed it can be easily divided for a shorter trail.

If you are looking for something with a little more adventure, either on foot or by cycle, then Treasure Trails has many trails for you to explore across all parts of Devon, with adventure, puzzle solving and entertainment on the way.  This new craze is a brilliant way to learn more about Devon whilst having fun at the same time.

Horse riding is yet another way to experience Devon's beautiful landscape, history and culture.  A moderate route for all levels is the Woodleigh to Topsham Bridge route.  There are many routes across the moors and through country lanes. Local riding schools offer days out in small or larger groups, with all equipment provided, tailoring the route to your requirements (maybe include a pub stop along the way!).  Horse riding in Devon is definitely something not to be missed.  Click here for more information on horse riding trails.
