Towns
There is a wealth of towns in Devon, rich in history and purpose. The many market towns, still upholding this right, include Tiverton and Crediton, for some years a bishops seat, and Honiton, which is also known for its lace-making particularly sought after by the aristocracy of the 17th century.

There are coastal resorts to suit all tastes on the north and south coasts including the heritage coast centre of Sidmouth, a regency town with formal gardens perched on the cliff-top overlooking the beach, the town centre and the fishing and pleasure boats going about below.
At the mouth of the river Exe, Exmouth’s long stretch of beach and sand dunes is a great spot for a stroll along the beach, a dip in the sea, kite flying or trying some diving or sailing.
The lively resort of Torquay, flanked by its sister towns Paignton and Brixham, is dominated by its grand harbour side where chic fish restaurants offer great views –this is also the birthplace of Agatha Christie.
The twin North Devonian towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are linked by the Cliff Railway, Lymouth a fishing town being on the waterfront and Lynton on the cliff above. The towns’ motto is ‘where Exmoor meets the sea’.
