Visitors to Exmouth this summer should look out for an extraordinary sight.
Nowhereisland is an Artist Taking the Lead project, and part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by artist Alex Hartley. It is produced by Situations at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
Nowhereisland, a new island nation originating from the Arctic, is voyaging around the south west’s spectacular coastline, as part of an epic voyage of over 500 nautical miles during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This new island nation is planned to be in Exmouth between the 4th and 7th August and will be anchored off Exmouth Beach.
Nowhereisland will be accompanied by a mobile Embassy packed full of activities, fascinating resources and informative artefacts that will tell the story of Nowhereisland’s origins and its inspiring journey. There’ll be something for all ages and interests and you’ll even be able to register as a Nowhereisland citizen. You’ll find it parked up opposite Exmouth Pavilion offering wonderful views of the island.
Background to Project :
The story of Nowhereisland began in 2004, when artist Alex Hartley searched for and discovered an island which had been revealed by the melting ice of a retreating glacier in the High Arctic. Alex was the first human to ever stand on the island and, with the help of the Norwegian Polar Institute, he registered it on all subsequent maps and charts. This island has become Nowhereisland, a new island nation migrating south in search of citizens.
To find out more about Nowhereisland, register as a citizen and find out where Nowhereisland will go next visit www.nowhereisland.org
Please note because you never know what the weather will be like at sea, these visiting dates in Exmouth (and elsewhere) are of course weather dependant.
