Devon Gardens

Sheltered nooks full of exotic plants, woodland walks, ancient walled gardens packed with glowing flowers, you'll find them all and much more in Devon's gardens. Thanks to its mild climate and rich fertile soil, Devon is a garden-lover's paradise so wherever you go, you will discover beautiful and inspiring gardens. Your only difficulty will be tearing yourself away!

Do you love walled gardens? Visit Winsford, with its amazing Victorian teak greenhouses, or revel in Hartland Abbey's 18th century walled garden, where you can enjoy meandering through gardens of azaleas, camellias and a bog garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll. For something a little different, why not seek out Broomhill, where over 300 sculptures adorn the grounds?

Elegant 18th century grounds come no more gracious than those of Castle Hill, a feast of rhododendrons and magnolias. Tapeley Park excels in its formal Italianate gardens and terraces. For the full splendour of Victorian kitchen gardens, drop in on Clovelly Court, where the classic garden has been recently restored. Devon does stylish gardens to perfection - no surprise then that the National Trust has nine major gardens here and the RHS has Rosemoor.

Are you yearning for more exotic lands? Search out Overbecks's near Salcombe where cliffs shelter an amazing sub-tropical garden, packed with plants from Australasia, and you will enjoy a Mediterranean atmosphere amid citrus trees and palms. Or take a world tour at the Gardeon House near Buckland Monachorum, where a walled garden is set in medieval ruins and you can also admire Cretan and South African collections.Docton Mill enjoys a stunning setting deep in a valley for its bog and woodland gardens.
