Princetown

Princetown is the highest village within Dartmoor National Park, and just about at its heart. It is the home of Dartmoor Prison, once incarcerating category A criminals such as the Cray brothers. But Princetown is now known for a good many other, more amenable assets. Dartmoor Brewery is situated within the village, concocting beers such as Jail Ale and Dartmoor IPA.

Princetown is a good base to discover the rest of the High Moor. There is the the old disused railway heading down to Yelverton which is a fantastic cycle route for the whole family and affords unequalled views along the way.

Follow the walking and cycling route out past the car park at the Plume of Feathers and you can take in South Hessary Tor and head on to the beautiful Burrator. In virtually every direction you can pick up a walking or cycling route, head off to the River Dart at nearby Dartmeet or marvel at the number of tors and wild landscape. However, for more inspiration and a wander around the gallery, head to the High Moorland Visitor Centre right in the centre of the village. Here you can purchase maps, find out what events are taking place and check the military firing times too!

There are a good few places to eat: try the Fox Tor Cafe which, in addition to hearty local food, can hook you up with a walking or cycling guide, should you need one. on this Visit Princetown on the Transmoor Link Bus and do a walk from the bus or discover more about Dartmoor's unique landscape, wildlife, history and development - from prehistoric times to the present day, in the High Moorland Visitor Centre. The Dartmoor Prison Museum is also worth a visit.
