UNESCO awarded Natural World Heritage Status to the coast of Dorset and East Devon in December 2001, in recognition of its unique landscape, which spans 185 million years of Earth history.
Start your exploration of this beautiful coastline at Orcombe Point in Exmouth. Here the rocks are 250 million years old and are red in colour. This is due to the desert environment that once existed there.
Following the stunning coastline from Exmouth in Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, the Jurassic Coast comprises beautiful landscapes, wildlife and geology.
The Natural World Heritage Site is the only one of its kind in England, and covers around 95 miles of coast, displaying not just Jurassic features, but older Triassic and younger Cretaceous rocks too.
Along the Jurassic Coast you may spot dolphins and basking sharks, not to mention the hundreds of different types of birds that have made this place their home. This international recognition places the coastline alongside some of the most famous and familiar names in the world such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Islands.
Whether you're feeling energetic, looking for something more relaxed or something a little bit different, the Jurassic Coast offers something for everyone. From ballooning, cycling, diving and fishing, to golf, horse riding, water sports and walking, the choice is endless.
